Prophet Muhammad: Songs in Praise of the Prophet: Salwat
The selection has been excerpted from a cassette, entitled Little Muslims: Songs for Muslim Children, produced by a Muslim organization in Singapore. The selection consists of the recitation of the salawat or formulaic invocation, in Arabic, of God's blessings on the Prophet Muhammad. Many Muslims believe that the recitation of the salawat brings spiritual blessing and ensures the intercession of the Prophet on the Day of Judgement. The phrasing of the salawat may vary slightly according to geographic region and group or sectarian affiliation. The version in this selection is as follows: allahuma salli 'ala Muhammad ya rabbi salli alaihi wasallim. Since the tape is intended for pedagogical use, the Arabic recitation is followed by a translation recited in English.
